We have got some jazz for you tonight. Paul Popa is back, and we just recorded a jazz standard that was very big on the Vaudeville circuit back in the late 1920s: Love Me Or Leave Me, with music by Walter Donaldson and lyrics by one of the greatest wordsmiths of all time, Gus Kahn. The first recorded version by Ruth Etting was the #2 best-selling song of 1929, #1 being Ain't Misbehavin' by Fats Waller. After that, all the greats recorded this song, such as Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and there have also been many instrumental versions, such as by Benny Goodman, Miles Davis, and Errol Garner. The latest recording of it that I know of is by the brilliant and breathtaking Andrea Motis from Spain. This song is still going strong on the jazz circuit.
So, here it is, ala Ralph Cinque and Paul Popa, from 1928,
Love Me or Leave Me.
