The actress Heather Mendez-Urich died late on Christmas Eve. She played Louisa in The Sound of Music in 1964. She was 68.

She died of cancer, and the irony is that she was devoting her life to helping people who have cancer. When her husband, the actor Robert Urich, died of a rare form of cancer in 2002, she started the Robert Urich Foundation which raises money for cancer research and to help cancer patients. Her terminal brain cancer was diagnosed just 4 weeks before her death.

I am one of the millions of people who think The Sound of Music is the greatest musical of all time. And I am quite sure it is the movie I have seen more times than any other, and I enjoy it every time. And last winter, there was a Broadway revival of The Sound of Music which came to Austin, and which I attended with my niece Jessica.  And it was magnificent. They did a fantastic job. The singing, the acting, and even the sets were superb.

And, in honor of Heather Mendez-Urich, I am going to watch The Sound of Music again this evening. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but sadly.
